About the Hospital
Founded in 1965, the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University is the only ophthalmic specialty institution directly under the National Health Commission and the oldest and largest eye hospital in China. As the country's sole national ophthalmic center integrating eye care, teaching, research, and blindness prevention, its comprehensive strength has ranked first in ophthalmology in the Fudan version of the China Hospital Rankings for many consecutive years. The Center is internationally leading in cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, fundus disease, ocular tumors, and myopia correction, attracting a large number of patients with complex ophthalmic conditions from around the world each year.

This department is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary eye diseases in children aged 0-14 and across all age groups, and is an important part of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. It is at an internationally advanced level in pediatric cataract, congenital fundus disease and genetic diagnosis of hereditary eye diseases, having pioneered multiple lens regeneration and AI diagnosis and treatment technologies.
Laser Vision Correction
This is one of the earliest institutions in China to carry out excimer laser and femtosecond laser myopia correction, and one of the largest single centers globally in SMILE surgery volume. It has multiple world-leading refractive surgery devices, at the industry's leading position in SMILE, ICL lens implantation and diagnosis-treatment of difficult refractive eye diseases, being an important base for refractive surgery training in Asia-Pacific.
Strabismus and Amblyopia
Established in the 1970s, this is one of the earliest strabismus and amblyopia specialties in China. As a national base for difficult-case diagnosis and treatment, it is at an internationally advanced level in complex strabismus surgery, refractory amblyopia treatment and binocular visual function reconstruction, with an independent visual rehabilitation and reconstruction platform.
Ocular Immunology and Uveitis
Established in 1978, this is an important part of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. As one of China's strongest ocular immunology and uveitis specialties, it has developed into a first-rate international clinical diagnosis and treatment center, leading China and internationally in basic and clinical research on ocular immune diseases.
Oculoplastics and Lacrimal Disease
This is one of the earliest specialties in China to carry out oculoplastics and lacrimal disease diagnosis and treatment.
